Pre-Intermediate level


In this lesson, students will develop their reading skills through the given text about unusual holiday homes,and they will also learn and review the use of first conditional sentences, using guided discovery method.Finally there is some controlled practice through sentence reformulation and some more free practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about Unusual homes in the context of Holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of First Conditional in the context of Holiday


Warm up (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Opening a video about holiday homes and trying to engage students with the video to the topic first, and little chat about the topic

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

To make them try to guess what the text is about by looking at the pictures,and to have them discuss their ideas in pairs.

Essential Vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • To clarify some new and important vocabulary

Trying to make the students guess the meaning of the words and in the second step explaining the words. And if if didn't work using pictures and realia.

Reading for gists (1st reading) (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The students will skim the text and try to understand the idea behind the text and check if the guesses were correct in pre reading section.

Reading for details (2nd reading) (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

To understand the whole text through reading word by word and also to see and identify the correct use of First Conditional in the text.

Post Reading (7-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To be able to answer some questions about the text such as true-false questions or multiple choice questions.For the free practice the students should be able to talk about an unusual holiday of their own,using First Conditional.
