Description

In this CELTA demo lesson, Ss learn how to write a review of a film, series, book or musical. In process they develop the skills of organisation and use of persuasive language.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a review in the context of book, film, musical, computer game, TV series

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of useful expressions to persuade the audience to read or see the product being reviewed

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share first Slide of presentation. Get Ss to work in pairs in BORs to discuss the task Qs for 2-3 mins. a Discuss the questions. ● Do you read reviews of films, music or books? ● Where do you usually read them? ● Do you always trust the reviews you read? Why/Why not? b Look at the image. What kind of DVD is it?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. Gist stage Share G-Form. Tell Ss they have 3 mins to do parts a and b. Show responses: likely answers: +tive, +: this one is an exception, stunning collection, filming spectacular; - slightly too much (music), small complaint, popping the discs is a little difficult 2. Exposure stage to focus on layout and useful language Share G-Form. Highlight Ss should match functions to paragraphs on page 1. Say that when they have finished page 1 they should answer Qs on page 2 and 3. Get them to submit answers after 4-5 mins. Show responses and provide answers: Page 1 Answers: Para 1: e. Catch readers’ attention Para 2: a. Positive points; b. Description of content; f. Positive part Para 3: c. Negative points; g. Additional features Para 4: d. Conclusión / recommendation Page 2 Where would you read it: on the internet or in a magazine Style: semi formal

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Draw attention to Page 3, get Ss to look back to text to check answers 1 The best moment - d is when the Komodo dragons hunt a buffalo. 2 Even if you aren’t into this subject matter - e you’ll find it completely absorbing. 3 If there is a downside- a it’s the music. 4 One other small complaint - c is that the DVD box isn’t very solid. 5 But all in all - b this is an excellent package.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

a Preparation stage Get Ss to Think of a film, TV series, computer game or website that they would like to review. Ask them to make notes for each paragraph. Assign them each a labelled slide on G-Slides. Give them 5 or 6 mins to make notes. Check progress and assist where required. b. Writing stage Tell Ss they should now write their reviews. Tell them they have up to 15 mins and say I will tell when to stop writing. Highlight they should prganise it into paragraphs using the Life review as a guide. They should use some of the useful phrases. Monitor and assist where required. As they write note examples of good language or errors for DEC

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Tell Ss they are now going to read a partner's review and evaluate it. Assign each student a partner. They should answer the questions about their partner's review. Give a little time for Ss to read their partner's review and put a tick or a cross next to the question. 1 Would you like to watch/read the subject of the review? 2 Does the review give enough information? 3 Do you think it’s a fair review? If time, put Ss in BORs so they can talk about what they liked or could be improved about each other's reviews.
