Description

In this lesson the ss will listen to a description of an old map and and discuss the key points about the legendary sea monsters.The lesson will start with filling the outline map of Turkey, allowing the students to get interested in the topic.This will be followed by a short discussion about the old map that shows the countries Nothern europe, including modern Scandinavia, Denmark, Finland and the Baltic states .Then, the ss will do a listening task where they will point to the images in the order they hear them and then answer the questions from memory.The lesson will be rounded up by ss discussing sea creatures from different parts of the world.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Outline the map of Turkey on the board. Ask the Ss if they can recognize the drawing on the board. Invite them to come up to the board and fill the map with a natural feature,a dot to represent city,etc) continue until there is a full map on the board. Ask students whether they like maps and are good at reading maps.

Pre-Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening task

Show Carta Marina. Ask their opinions about the map.(What does it show?How old do you think it is?) Ss discuss their ideas in pairs. Show a section of Carta Marina on PPT. T: How is this map different from the previous one?Elicit the answers. Elicit the words 'cartographer ,wreckage'

While-Listening #1 (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging listening task for specific information

Tell students they are going to hear a description about the origins and details of this map. Instruction:Listen and point to the image on the map in the order you hear them. ICQ. Play the recording. Ss peer-check their answers. Show the answer key on the board.

While-Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging inference listening task

Tell Ss to look at the questions , which touch specific details from the listening. Ask them to try and answer as many of the questions as possible from memory. Ss discuss in groups. Monitor. Play the recording a second time and let them check their answers. FB. Answer key on the wall.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss an opportunity to practice speaking for fluency

Ask Ss if they know any other legends about sea monsters. Show them the descriptions of common sea monsters that appear in legends of many different cultures. Ss discuss in groups. Show the pictures of the monsters on PPT.Ss match the descriptions with the pictures. Ask Ss if there are any legends related to sea monsters in their culture? w/c discussion
