Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson and to activate schemata (prior knowledge) about the topic of the text

T displays projections of some cultural and natural sites that students might be familiar with. Sts have a guided Q&A conversations in pairs. T conducts feedback by asking students about their answers and providing the answers if students fail to do it.

New Vocabulary: geographical features (3-5 minutes) • To provide clarification on new vocabulary (related to the text)

T displays a projection that includes the seven new vocabulary items; a mountain, a lake, a forest, a desert, a river, an island, and a national park. T elicits the words from sts if possible. If not, T provides the new vocabulary, checks meaning by asking sts to give examples of the new words from their own country, and finally drills pronunciation.

Exercise on vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To practice the new vocabulary

T distributes a HO including a vocabulary exercise on the words they have just been introduced to. Sts complete the exercise. T conducts feedback by having sts listen to the answers.

New Vocabulary: directions of a compass (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of directions, using the photos of a compass and a map (in the book)

T displays a projection of a compass on the WB and elicits the directions if possible. T provides practice and drilling of directions. T displays a google-map image of the students' hometown and elicits sentences about neighboring cities.

Practicing compass directions (3-5 minutes) • To practice new vocabulary

T distributes HO about the map on p42 of the book. Sts complete the exercise and check in pairs. T monitors and supports sts.

Listening for gist (2-4 minutes) • To provide practice in listening for gist

T explains the task to sts. Sts will listen to an audio track and choose the main idea of the audio. T distributes HO and plays audio track n2.40. As the main aim in this lesson is both listening and reading, sts listen to the text without reading it. T conducts feedback.

Listening for details (3-5 minutes) • To provide practice in listening for specific details

T distributes another HO to students and plays the audio again. Sts complete another listening exercise about details from the audio. Sts check in pairs. T plays the audio again if most sts do not the right answers. T conducts WCFB.

Reading for gist (2-4 minutes) • To provide practice in reading for the main idea of the text

Before the lesson has started, T sticks the reading text to the wall. Next to it, T sticks 3 slips of paper. One of which is the title of the text. T divides the class into three teams (depending on the number of the sts). T demonstrates the task. Sts have 30 seconds to decide the best title and go back to their seats. T conducts feedback.

Reading for details (5-7 minutes) • To provide practice in scan reading for specific information

T disributes another handout with numbers. Sts need to go and find what the numbers refer to. Sts do this in turn if they are pairs. T conducts FB. Based on these numbers, sts do exercise 2 (reading and listening). Sts complete the exercise and check in pairs. T monitors and checks if needed.

(Optional) Wrap-up with a mini-conversation (2-4 minutes) • To offer students the chance to personalize the topic and to provide a smooth transition to the next part of the lesson

T writes the question. "Are there cultural or natural sites in Turkey?" T can write some responses on the board. T can show the students the website of UNESCO World Heritage sites and show them the registered sites in Turkey if there is time.
