Main Aims

  • To provide practice and review of The Passive

Subsidiary Aims

  • reading for gist and speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show picture of events that have marked history. Students will discuss and say which one they feel has made the biggest impact in history. Studets will share their ideas with the class.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will be given a handout which includes a quiz. The students will complete the quiz individually for 3 minutes and then share their answers in BoRs if there are enogh students. If not, just check as a class with answer key.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Draw SS attention to target language e.g. .... ¨had been divided by a wall...¨ highlight all passive examples from the quiz and have students try to figure out its use. Try to get SS to say that we use it when we don´t know or don´t want to mention who the person or thing who did the action is.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use my LA sheet to help me explain this grammar rule. I will put emphasis on getting students to realize that we do not have to use a subject for passive, that is usually formal and common in writings. Also to help them understand the different uses of passive especially with different times, I will use Jamboard for students to explore the language on their own and then we will check with answer key.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will complete the last activity on the handout by themselves for about 3 minutes. Then students will put into BoRs to discuss their answers with their classmates. Once time is up, SS will return to main session and we will go over the answers with AK.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be put into BoRs where they will have to choose a historical event that they feel has been very important to history and they must explain it to their partner using the passive. If there is a small group have them share with the class. I will monitor students pay close attention to the SS use of the target language.

Feedback (2-4 minutes) • To go over any language mistakes students made during the production stage

Once all SS have given their presentations, I will go over any missused or mispronounced words. I will also make students aware whether or not they were using the passive correctly.
