Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for formal negotiations in the context of building a holiday complex at a beach

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about formal negotiations
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of building a holiday complex at a beach
  • To provide clarification of functional language in the context of formal negotiations.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students look at the screen and discuss the questions: 1. Have you had to negotiate in any of the following situations: - at work - with university of college tutors - when you're buying something - to get a better deal (e.g. from a service provider) 2. What was the subject of the negotiation? 3. Do you feel comfortable negotiating?

Exposure (5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening

Students listen to the audio for gist, then do an intensive gist task individually.

Highlighting (2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students look at the target language and read seven statements on the screen.

Clarification (8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher explains MFP

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are offered to do a task on GoogleForms. They need to fill in the gaps.

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students do the speaking activity in pairs in Break Out Rooms.

Open class feedback (1 minutes) • To provide positive feedback

Teacher nominates a couple of students to share their feedback after the speaking activity.

Delayed Error Correction (4 minutes) • To correct spoken errors

Teacher types students' errors on whiteboard for positive feedback and correction of errors in the post activity speaking stage.
