In this lesson, students will discuss whether one can wear what he/she wants at work. They will read a text (a newspaper article) about a legal case related to same topic doing prediction, gist and detailed reading tasks. They will follow this up with a speaking activity discussing their own opinions on the topic.

Main Aims

  • To practice gist and detailed reading using a text about a legal case in the context of clothes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking practice
  • To provide clothes vocabulary practice


Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will write "we can wear whatever we want at work" on the board and ask Ss to discuss in pairs -T-S FB (elicit some ideas)

Pre-Reading/Pre- Teaching Vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • To activate/revise previously known vocab. and introduce new ones

-Ss will do matching exercise -T will clarify new vocab. focusing on meaning, form and pronunciation -T drills S-WB FB

Gist reading (6-7 minutes) • To predict the content of the text

-Ss will look at the headline and photo and try to guess what the text is about in pairs -Ss then will read the article to see if their guesses were correct -WCF

Detailed reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with more challenging detailed reading

-Ss will read the article again -Ss will do T/F activity Check in pairs WCF (Ss can read a second time if necessary)

Post-reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to expand on what they have learned

-T will give three questions -Ss will discuss in pairs Delayed error correction, as necessary

If time activity (Speaking practice) (10-12 minutes) • To practice semi-controlled speaking

-T will give three statements -Ss will discuss in groups (Delayed error correction as necessary)
