Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson the student will be able to use different strategies such as predicting and guessing part of speech to answer summary completion questions on Ithe ELTS listening test section 4. The student will achieve this aim by learning the different listening strategies and putting them into practise by completing summaries and summary notes on different IELTS listening exercises on the topics of Internet, survival, marriage, etc. Finally, the student will assess her success by checking her answers with the answer key and comparing the strategies she used to the suggested strategy feedback text

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise prediction in reading
  • To learn and understand the format of section 4 of the Listening Component
  • To practise speaking skills for fluency and accuracy
  • To practise time management skills by speaking for two minutes on a given topic and having only one minute for preparation

Procedure

Speaking test (11-14 minutes) • To practise time management and speaking skills for fluency and accuracy. It is also part of the class routine

1. S starts the recording. T gives initial instructions and asks the questions for part 1 of the test. S answers the questions (3-4 min) 2. T gives instructions and shows cue card. The student prepare what she's going to say and takes notes. T indicates time and S talks about the topic within the time limit (3-4 min) 3. T gives instructions and asks questions. S answer the questions this time providing reasons for her ideas (5-6 min)

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To set context, engage the student and learn and understand the format of section 4 of the listening component

1. T indicates that the S will be working on section 4 of the test. Then asks the questions "what is section 4 about?" and "how is it different from the previous three sections?". S answers the questions based on her previous and recent experience (2 min) 2. T shows general information about section 4 with some gaps. S reads and fills the gaps to complete the information (3 min)

Transition (2-3 minutes) • To learn different strategies to approach summary and summary notes completion questions as well as learning the language focus for section 4

1. T briefly explains the common types of questions found in section 3 and shows the main strategies with some gaps. S reads and fill the gaps to complete the strategies. The T talks about the language focus for the section and elicits some examples from the S (3 min)

Task 1 Preparation (4-5 minutes) • To learn strategies to answer summary completion questions

1.T shows the strategies. S reads the strategies. T elicits and clarifies tricky information (3 min) 2. S completes the first two questions guided by T (1 min)

Task 1 Performance and feedback (7-8 minutes) • To use forecasting and guessing strategies to answer summary completion questions

1. T shows the summary with gaps. S reads through the instructions and summary and predicts the type of word and information needed to fill each gap, giving reasons for her choices (3 min) 2. T plays the audio. S listens and fills the gaps with no more than three words or numbers (2 min) 3. T shows the feedback text and S compares her answers and strategies with the ones suggested by the text (3 min)

Task 2 Performance and feedback (flexi stage) (5-7 minutes) • To assess S correct use and understanding of forecasting strategies to answer summary completion questions

1. T shows summary with gaps. S reads the instructions and summary and predicts the type of word and information needed to fill each gap (3 min) 2. T plays the audio. S listens to the audio and fills the gaps with no more than three words (2 min) 3. T shows answers for S to compare her answers and strategy (2 min)

Task 3: Completing Summary Notes Preparation annd guided practice (9-10 minutes) • To use forecasting and guessing part of speech strategies to answer summary notes completion questions

1. T shows some tips to answer summary notes completion questions. S goes through the tips (1 min) 2. T shows the instructions. S fills the gaps to complete the instructions (2 min) 3. T gives instructions. S goes through the first step of the task guided by T (2 min) 4. T gives instructions for step 2. S predicts the words to fill the gaps guided by T. The T shows feedback for S to check her strategy. This is a prediction activity, therefore it has no audio (5 min)

Task 4: Final task performance and feedback (5-6 minutes) • To assess S correct use and understanding of forecasting and guessing part of speech strategies to answer summary notes completion questions

1. T gives instructions. S goes through the summary notes and predicts / guess the part of speech needed to fill each gap (2-3 min) 2. T plays audio. S listens and fills the gaps with no more than three words or numbers (2 min) 3. S compares her answers to the answer key (1 min)

Reflection (3-5 minutes) • To assess the aim of the lesson, which ones were achieved and what the S found easy or difficult as well as how she will continue practising on her own

1. T shows can do statements. S complete the statements with "Excellent" "Good" or "Not so good" and gives reasons (2 min) 2. T asks the questions "How easy or difficult was it for you to use prediction strategies to approach the listening test?" "Were these strategies useful to you?" "What will you do to keep practising these strategies?". S answers the questions providing reasons and examples when necessary (3 min)
