Description

In this lesson, the students learn how to describe a school through reading a text about an international school and listening to a model conversation about this school. The students also learn learn the days of the week and how to ask questions through the above reading and listening parts.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of days of the week in the context of a description of a school.
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking questions in the context of talking about schools

Procedure

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • Set the scene of the reading text and review some vocabulary.

1. Write the word "school" on the board, and ask the students to come to the board and write down words related to school in a form of a diagram of one main balloon and some other related ones. 2. Write 4 information topics about school on the board. Give an example, and ask the students to discuss their school information in pairs. Ask them about their schools. 3. Write MTWTFSS on the board. Ask the students to read the letters. Ask them how many letters they are, and what they think the letters stand for.

Reading (8-10 minutes) • practice reading to find specific information

Ask the students to look at the photos, and ask them some questions to elicit information in the reading text. Ask them to look at the questions. Ask similar questions about a different school (the one they are in at the moment), and elicit answers. Write the answers on the board. Ask them to read the text and answer the questions. They check answers with their partners. Elicit the answers. Read the text and ask the students to repeat. Highlight the model language structures.

Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • learn days of the week

Write the five letters that days of the week start with in lower case. Ask the students to come to the board and write the upper counterparts. Ask the students to complete days of the week. Play the recording for the students to check their answers, and again to repeat. While doing so, the teacher highlights the stress. Show the students some pictures of activities done on certain days around the world, ask them to say what day every one is on.

Listening (20-22 minutes) • Practice listening to look for specific information.

Ask the students to look at the handout, and ask them to try to match the questions with the answers in the next exercise. They do this in pairs. Play the recording, and ask the students to put the questions in order. play again, and ask them to check their answers with their partners. Ask the students to point out the wrong words in bold while listening. Play the son "Friday I'm in love". Ask the students to check with their partners. ( If we have enough time) Play the song again and with class listen and use the thumb up with right the bold days and down with the wrong ones.
