In this lesson, students will write a short essay providing arguments for and against zoos.

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to practice writing skills by producing a for and against essay in the context of zoos.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to review of signposting phrases by writing a for and against essay about zoos.
  • Students will be able to identify the layout of a for and against essay by being exposed to an essay model and producing their own piece of writing.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will instruct Ss to answer the following questions: Have you ever visited a zoo? What was the most interesting thing about it? T will start an open class discussion. Ss will share their experiences and opinions about visiting a zoo in the past.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

T will instruct Ss to read individually the sample essay "Who Benefits from Zoos? Humans or Animals?" and match each paragraph with the corresponding description through Google Forms. T will pair Ss up to compare their answers. Ss will go to breakout rooms to compare and discuss their answers. T will conduct OCFB. Then, provide a diagram with the structure of a for and against essay. T will draw Ss' attention to TL highlighted in bold. T will ask Ss to match the phrases with the correct use through Google Jamboard. T will provide answer key for the activity. T will move on to MAFP. T will cover Meaning through the following CCQ's: -Do these phrases make the text more understandable? -Are these phrases useful for who? The reader or the author? both, more for the reader. T will cover Appropriacy by asking the following question: -Would you use these phrases with your friends? no T will cover Form by explaining that the TL is about semi-fixed phrases. Semi-fixed phrases are those that can change some of their words and still have the same meaning. Here, T will provide examples: In addition to this - Additionally - In addition/In conclusion - As a conclusion - To conclude/For example - As an example - An example of this is…/One of the advantages of… is… - An advantage of… is… T will cover Pronunciation by modeling sentence stress and drilling with Ss twice.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice writing skills

T wil instruct Ss to write a 50-80 word essay providing one argument for and one argument against animals living in zoos. T provides Ss the TL already presented for them to use in their essay. (share phrases through chat as well) Ss will have 20 minutes to write their essay in their assigned Google Slide. T will help Ss with further questions, if necessary.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will assign pairs to evaluate Ss' essays. T will provide a checklist through Google Forms for Ss to evaluate their partner's writing. Ss will have 5 minutes to evaluate their assigned partner's essay and send in the form. T will show each Ss checklist and address any issues found. T will conduct DEC. T will praise Ss for their work and farewell them.
