Describing people

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about describing people as well as asking questions about asking about people. The lesson starts with a small discussion about two celebrities that look alike, students discuss their similar features. This is followed by small descriptions of people. Then, some language preparation to put into practice the language. Finally, they will work in teams and one person from the team will pick a person and describe it and their peers will try to guess which person they are describing.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*Teacher greets students. "Hello class, how are you feeling today?" "It's good to see you again". *Teacher displays the first slide. Then tell students, "these are two famous celebrities, one is Katy Perry and the other is Zoey Deschanel" Ask the following questions: -Do you know these celebrities? -Do you think they look alike? -What similarities do you think they have? *Ask students to write on the board or to tell orally what similarities they think they had. (try to nominate students).

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

*Teacher move on to the next slide: "Okay guys now let's take a look at these pictures" I want you to read them and discuss within teams which description belongs to each person. You will have 2 minutes to answer this activity. ICQs: Is this activity in pairs or individually? How much time do you have to answer? *Teacher put students in break out rooms" When the 2 minutes are over, go back to the main room and check the answers together.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

*Teacher move on to the next slide. "Okay, so these phrases are for asking about people and describing them." *For meaning read the sentences and use CCQs to check meaning. *Then ask if the phrase is formal or informal. *Next, ask them to identify the parts of speech in the phrases. Finally, make sure to cover pronunciation, first, ask students to listen and repeat, then ask for volunteers to repeat, next, ask them to identify the word stress of the sentences and at the end check for intonation on the questions.

Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

*For this stage, students will be divided into teams. *They will be introduced to a variety of pictures in which one student will select one and describe it while the other students will try to guess which person are they describing. They will have 6 minutes to play this guessing game, once they finish they will play the same game but with different parners

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Check mispronounced words, false friends, grammar mistakes, L1 interference
