Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Write down some imaginary situations using the second conditional. 2. Compare answers with your classmates. 3. Share your ideas with the class.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Review the structure of the second conditional. 2. Ask the students to point out the main tenses. 3. Explain the usage of the second conditional. 4. Ask the students to make sentences.

Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Read the following situations. 2. In pairs, think about what if the situation was different. 3. Write down your answers. 4. Share your answers with the class. 5. I will provide support with ideas and the emerging language.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1. In pairs, tell your partner about things you want to change in your life. 2. Compare your ideas. 3. I'll provide support on the emerging language. 4. Share your answers.

Free Practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. In pairs, brainstorm some of the current world events. 2. Think about/suggest improvements using the second conditional. 3. Write down your answers. 4. Share your answers with the class.
