Celta course TP5
Beginner (A1) level

Description

In this lesson, students will receive speaking practice in regards to sharing their weekend activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice about showing interest and asking follow-up questions in the context of weekend activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for follow-up questions
  • To provide practice of words for leisure or chores in the context of weekend activities.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Teacher greets the students. - Teacher shares a bit of what they did during the weekend. They then ask how students spent their weekend.

Content and Language preparation (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks

- Teacher introduces the first activity (fill-in-the-blanks) Students have to choose the correct word or phrase from a box, with which they have to finish the sentence. Students are provided an example per sentence. Teacher should model the activity for the students by answering the first item onscreen. This activity should take 5 minutes to complete. ICQs: What are you going to do? Are you doing this in teams or by yourselves? How much time do you have to do this? - After time is up, Teacher shows the answer onscreen for the students and offers clarification. - Language preparation begins. MFP for each of the phrases introduced in the previous activity are explained. Teacher should elicit the past simple forms of the verbs, which will be the forms that they will use during the speaking activity.

Speaking activity (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target speaking skills

- Teacher will introduce the next activity: Students will be sent to BORs in order to talk to their peers. Ideally, BORs will contain 3 students, but it could be done with 2-4. Students will talk about their most recent weekend activities for approximately 10 minutes. Once time is up, BORs will be reshuffled so students have more opportunities to share their stories with more of their peers. This activity should take 20 minutes total. ICQs: Who are you going to talk to? What are you going to talk about? How much time do you have? Students should be provided with a language sheet, so they have access to the sentences they can use.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- Once everyone is back to the main session, Teacher provides OCFB on the mistakes they could have picked up during monitoring of the lesson. - If possible, Teacher should briefly mention some speaking strategies that students could use to be more fluent (optional). - Dismiss.
