This lesson will introduce the students to the second conditional and practice it in various contexts.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of conditionals-second in various contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conditionals-second in various contexts.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. In pairs, the students will discuss the following questions: A. Supposing you could meet anyone you wanted, alive or dead, who would it be? Why? B. If you could live in another time in history, what would it be? 2. The students will share their answers with the class.

Highlighting (10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Briefly explain the difference between conditionals first and second. 2. Elicit the difference between the two conditionals. 3. Ask the students to make two sentences, one first and one second.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1. Read the incomplete sentences in the box. 2. In pairs, brainstorm some endings for these sentences. 3. Write down the whole sentence. 4. Read your sentences after you added the endings. 5. Share your sentences with the class.

Free Practice/Homework (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. Ask the students to read the question. 2. Write five things you can do with a million euros. 3. Share your ideas with the class. 4. The class will decide who should get the money.
