TP8 - Grammar
Upper intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about third conditional in the context of a celebrity love story and then students will about their own past unreal situations to review what they have learnt about third conditional from the class.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of third conditional in the context of love story and their own unreal past situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a freer activity in using third conditional in the context of making a big decision and what would have happened if they didn't make that decision

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Firstly, I will ask the students if they believe/experienced in love at first sight in OCFB. Then I will ask the students if they have ever heard of the love story of Michael Caine and Shakira (hopefully they would know). If the students do not know, I will briefly explain that he was a famous actor and he once saw this beautiful lady on TV and started his search for his. I will elicit that 'if she hadn't answered on the 12th phone call, they would not have married/he would have gone to Brazil if he didn't discover that she was in London.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Next I will tell the students that they will be in partners in BORs (Student A and Student B). Student A will read the first story and Student B will read the second. Then answer these questions I will put in the chat: 1. Why did Michael change his name? 2. Why did Michael not go to Brazil? 3. How did Shakira become Miss Guyana? 4. How was Brazil a turning point in Shakira's life? 5. How and why did her flatmates try to protect her?

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will then tell the students we will be learning about the third conditional. The third conditional is imagining something that did not happen in the past. e.g. If it had rained, you would have gotten wet. You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder. It is 'IF + past perfect + would have + past participle. Then in OCFB we will make 3rd conditional sentences for these facts: Michael was watching TV and saw an advert featuring Miss Guyana/If Michael hadn't been watching TV, he would not have seen her. I will ask them to help me find the third conditional phrases in the text I will show on Google Slides 2.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

For meaning, I will show them on google slides 1 questions to clarify their knowledge on the meaning of third conditional in OCFB. For form, I will refer them to google slide 2 which we did previously to clarify anything else. For pronunciation, I will say these sentences 'I would have *done* the same' ' I *wouldn't* have *done* that' at normal speed and slowed down then ask students answer these questions. Questions: where did you notice the stress? why would there be a stress on these?

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

To review the students knowledge about third conditional, I will put them in BORs and ask them to answer these questions to their partner. I will put the questions in chat. Have you ever had to make a really big decision? Can you imagine what would have happened if you hadn’t made that decision? I will conduct DEC in OCFB.
