TP 5, Renting a flat
Elementary (A1) level

Description

In this lesson students will learn some new vocabulary about furniture. First the vocabulary will be elicited, taught and drilled, then they will use it in speaking activity in which they will have a chance to review their previous topic "there is, there are"

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of furniture: fridge, washing machine in the context of renting a flat

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of renting a flat

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet Ss. Ask them to look around, show them the imaginary " flat" (bedroom, kitchen, living room. Elicit what vocabulary they know.

Language Focus (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask Ss in pairs to match pictures with the words. Check if they have matched everything. When they finish ask them to stick the words on the walls of "rooms" Ss walk around to see what objects there are in each room. write the words fridge, cooker, washing machine, sink and coffee table on the board, model, spell and drill. Hand out a worksheet with the furniture vocabulary and the pictures, Ask them to face it down, erase the words, point at pictures and ask them to say what it is.

Highlighting (7-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the picture of the hotel room saying that I don't want to stay in a hotel anymore. I want to rent a flat. Elicit the word rent. Show a picture of a flat and a lot of money, making sad face and asking if I have so much money. I don't want t buy but I want t stay for a while, 1-2 months. Do I have money to buy a flat? No Can I stay in a flat for a few months? yes Do I have enough money to rent a flat ? Yes Hand out the advert. Ss answer questions in pairs.

Preparation (3-6 minutes) • To get ready for the speaking activity

Write on the board what kind of flat I want. Place:On a quiet street Rooms: With a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room. Money: 400-500 TL Ask them to look at the advert and decide which one is suitable for me.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As I don't have time to go and have a look at those flats, they will be my friends who are very nice to call the tenants and ask some questions about flats. remind them the form that they have learned from the previous lesson " there is, there are" demonstrate an example. Is there a double bed on the bedroom or single bed? Is there a washing machine in the kitchen? Are there any sofas or armchairs? Is there a balcony?

Follow up (3-4 minutes) • To summarise the lesson and correct the errors

Follow up Ask Ss t suggest me which flat is suitable for me and why. then ask which one they would choose and why.
