Writing lesson about a book/film review
Pre intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a book review in the context of a troubled teenager facing her fears

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and deduction reading through a model of production and its analysis

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

This will be the last lesson so I give students an interactive break saying somethinf relevant and funny. I share my screen in the 3rd slide of the jamboard. I tell them that I generally don't like to read book review before I buy a book because I don't want to be prejudiced by the critics' opinions. I only read the abstract and if I like it I buy it. What about you guys?

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I share my screen and the link of the google form in the chat. I give students 2-3 minutes to read the text individually and ask them to give a title to it. Then I tell them to read again and try to answer the rest of the questions. I'll give them 3 minutes for that. Then I put them into the BOR to compare their answers for 2 min Then I share the answers with them and give them feedback if they have questions

Useful Language (7-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I share the first slide and ask to match the words on the right with the words on the left. When that it is done I ask what other words we can use ( I elicit simple, nice, quick etc) Then I show the second slide where I have written all these phrases that we found in the text and that I elicited. I ask if there are questions and I share with them in chat a screenshot of that. I also ask them to take a screenshot because they're going to need it in the next step.

Productive Task(s) (10-14 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I show the google form writing task and share the link to the chat. I tell them "Now, take a minute and think about your favourite book" 1 minute later: Sury what is your favourite book? "Perfect: you are going to write a review of you favourite book" Try to follow the structure of the model and use the useful language. Please find your name in the form. Can you all find your name? (Yes) Perfect. Write your review below your name. You have 10 -12 minutes.

Feedback and Error Correction (9-11 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I stop the time and tell Ss: I'll put you in BOR. Please share your screen and read each other's review. Tell your classmate if you would like to read the book they wrote about. You have 4-5 minutes In these 5 minutes I monitor the BOR and find more errors. Then I call them in the main session and I ask them if they would like to read some of their classmates books. I spend the last 5-6 minutes for DEC with the help of the Ss I thank the Ss and finish the session
