In this lesson, the students will learn and practice using real conditionals in the context of therapies. The lesson starts by listening to audio about different kinds of therapies.


Main Aims

  • To clarify/ review and practice real conditionals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of real conditionals in the context of therapy.
  • To provide product writing practice of a sentences in the context of therapy.


Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students to talk about therapies.

Show the Ss g-slides and show the definition of therapy. Ask the Ss what type of therapies they know about. Then play audio about the radio program and the type of therapies there are. Give the Ss the link to the g-forms to answer two questions about the audio they've listened. Check answers in OCFB. Answers: 1. Destruction therapy and laughter therapy 2. Destruction therapy is used to help people when they are stressed or angry. Laughter therapy is used in hospitals to help people with their pain.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell Ss to look at the sentences in the g-slides. The sentences are from the program and they should choose which sentences talk about "general situation" (GS) and which talk about a "specific/future situation" (FS). Answer: 1. GS 2. FS 3. FS 4. GS

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show the Ss the g-slides. Tell them to match the example sentences with the correct form and meaning with the example sentences. Check answers OCFB. Ask ccq’s about each sentence. Zero conditional ccq’s: Can the ball stay in the air? Is it 100% guaranteed that the ball will fall back down? 1st conditional ccq´s: *Is there a chance for me to pass the test?Yes. *Can this happen? Yes. *Does it mean my passing is 100% guaranteed? No. But a test is a very likely thing that can happen. And that is the first conditional sentence. Then as a whole class, do an example for each. Pronunciation: Play audio for students and show them g-slides so they can highlight the words they hear.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give Ss access to g-slides. Ss have to fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb in parenthesis. Also have to mark each sentence if they are zero or first conditional. Ss will do this individually, then OCFB. Answers: 1ª.makes (0) b. i´ll feel (1st) 2ª i´ll give (1) b. finish (0) 3a I’ll get (1st) b. get (0) 4a like (0) b. I’ll stop (1st)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will each get a slide to complete the sentences so that it is true to the students. Ss will compare in BOR’s and see if they can find any similarities. Check in OCFB. Sentences: When I get older …… When my English gets better, I….. If I’m happy, I usually…. When I get home this evening… If I’m stressed, I usually….
