TP5 - Grammar: first and second conditional
Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson ss wil be exposed to first and second condictional using the technique of Test-Teach-Test

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of first and second conditional

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in controlled and semi-controlled activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T shows two photos depict a real situation and an unreal one, and try to let Ss deduce the two categories (likely, unlikely) discussing in pairs. This step will allow the T to introduce the conditions for the first and the second conditional.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The T places some papers on the floor. Each sheet represents a situation. Students are asked to paste below the corresponding column (likely, unlikely) situation. In pairs, students should think about some possible consequences or how they would behave in those contexts. Once a brief brainstorm, the T asks students if they can formulate hypothetical sentences. If necessary, the T will provide a model sentence (If ..., I ...).

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The T tries to infer the grammar rules for the first and second conditional. Using CCQs, the T will try to understand if there are doubts. At the end of this stage, the T will hand out an outline to help Ss to fix the concept.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

In pairs, students will complete an exercise using the first and second conditional. The correction will be made on the board. Again, to ensure that the concept is clear, we will use CCQs.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide ss with semi-controlled practice of the TL

La classe viene suddivisa in gruppi di 3 o 4 studenti. L'attività consiste nel chiedere agli altri studenti cosa succederebbe (come si comporterebbero) in una serie di situazioni. Ad ogni gruppo viene consegnata una lista di possibili domande. Il T monitora durante l'attività e, se possibile, corregge gli errori più comuni alla fine della lezione.
