Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of verb + noun collocations in the context of habits

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of collocations in the context of habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will share a link to a jamboard slide where I will have written down some names of characters from the text ' The Peoples' Watchers". I will ask ss what they remember about them. ex. "What do you remember about Richard Wiseman? (Professor) Ss will answer with what they remembered. Another question " Do you remember who is Emma? (Psychologist) Again ss will answer with what they remembered The last question, " Do you remember something about Jack? (Psychologist) And then We will move over to the next stage...

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In the same link that we use in the lead-in, I will move over (slide 1-2) and have students read the text ( gist task ) to confirm what they had told me in the previous stage. After students read and confirm their answers, we will discuss them in open class feedback. Then, I will share a link in the zoom meeting chat to a jamboard slide where they will complete an exercise (3A) (Slide 3) In this exercise, students have to match verb-noun collocations. I will do the first one as an example for them and after they will complete it individually. And once they are done they will look at the text again to confirm their answers. We will again have OCFB. Answers: 1. (g), 2. (a) 3. (b) 4. (f) 5. (e) 6. (d) 7. (c)

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To clarify the meaning of the verb-noun collocations I'll have students complete a google form document which I will send thru the zoom chat window. After students click on the link I will ask them to confirm if they have access to the GF and are able to work without any technical problems. After students confirm this, I will proceed to explain what they will do in the GF. Students will see a picture for each question and will have to answer it by selecting the verb-noun collocation which corresponds to the picture itself. After working on the google form, I will share another link. The link will lead to a jamboard slide where I will have some of the verb-noun collocations. The verb-noun collocations that I would use are: Oo 1. raise money O o oo 2. watch a programme o Oooo 3. do experiments I will ask students to read them one by one and they would have to define where the stress is in that collocation. After students identify the stress they will have the opportunity to write it on their own on the jamboard board and then we will move over to the next stage.

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will share a link to the zoom meeting chat to a google form document, which will be the same as in the previous stage but in this stage, they will do section number 2., exercise 4A. This exercise will provide controlled practice of the language. Learners will do this exercise individually, and then we will check answers in OCFB. Answers: 1- est gates/ get seats 2- heal loads/ hold a sale 3- ease my iron/ raise money 4- grammar to a peach/ watch a programme 5- opened termsix/ do experiments 6- I shut car/ cuts hair

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will provide students with the link to the jamboard slide where I will have three verb-noun collocations and a title of "Have you ever ". I will ask students to turn the verb-noun collocation into questions along with the title shown in the slide. And after converting these, ask the question to a classmate. This activity will reinforce speaking and listening skills. If there are no other students besides the only one, this activity will be done in teacher-student interaction.
