Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Intelligence in the context of memory, Autism, descriptive adjectives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by presenting the titles of the text they will read: 'The Human Computer' and 'The Human Camara'. I will then show the following question: 'What special abilities do you think they have?' and students will have to brainstorm on predictions about the titles and I will be writing them on the jamboard sharing screen.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will present 4 lexical items to explain their meaning in order for ss to understand the text they will read after. I will go word over the word and their meaning and asked CCQ's to verify they understood the meaning. The words will be: Autistic-a mental condition that makes it hard or difficult to understand people and form relationships. CCQ ( Is it a physical or mental condition? Porridge- a dish consisting of oatmeal or other cereals boiled in water or mil until thick. CCQ ( Is this dish prepared at the moment or before eating time? Pebble(s)- small stones(rocks) made smooth and round by the water in the sea. CCQ ( Are they big or small stones? After explaining the meaning I will move over to the next slide where ss will do an exercise where they will need to identify the stress in each word and match stress with the word. Autistic- Ooo Porridge- Oo Pebbles-Oo

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will send ss the link of the jamboard slide where the text is and ask them to read it to get a general idea of the text(exercise 4B). They will have 3 minutes to do so.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will send ss a link which is a google form and ask ss to answer section 1 of the google form( exercise 4C) after reading the text for a second time, in this second time in a read for detail. They will peer-check the answer before we do so in open class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Learners will share information about both texts in pairs. (If there is only one student, this activity will be done in Teacher-student interaction) (Exercise 4D) After discussing the texts I will share a jamboard slide with ss where I will present a speaking activity which will be to think about some questions in the slide and share answers with peers or if there are no students, the student will share with the teacher. The questions are: 1- Think about an expert in your area of interest. Discuss with class. 2- Think of someone you know and who is talented. Share with the class. 3- Think of something you have an aptitude for and share with peers and class. After I check the errors learners had during the lesson.
