Functional Language: At the newsagent's
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn how to make requests at a newsagent's store. Students will firstly review the lexis related to the items that can be found at a newsagent's.Students will listen to a recording of a customer and a shop assistant and complete various activities related to the requests made by the customer and the responses of the shop assistant. Students then perform a role play where one student is the shop assistant and one student is the customer. They will both have a list of words that they can use in the conversation.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for making requests in the context of shopping language

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping language
  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about items in the context of shoppping language

Procedure

Warm up- match pictures with meaning (5-7 minutes) • to find out what the students know.

Students will look at some pictures of items that are found in a newsagent and match the pictures with the right definition.

Listening activity (7-8 minutes) • to listen for specific information.

Students will listen to two people who are in a newsagent and will tick the things they buy. They will have pictures of various items. Check answers in pairs. Feedback.

Listening Activity (8-10 minutes) • listening for detail

Students will listen to the recording again and put what the shop assistant says in the correct order. Check answers in pairs. Whole class feedback. Students put the sentences in the right order on the board.

Language Focus (5-7 minutes) • to be able to say what you want and how to ask about prices

Students will be given sentences where they have to fill the gap. The sentences are: I'll have a .......................................... Have you got a......................................? Can I have ....................................? How much are..................................? How much is ................................? Students will check their answers will their partner and practice saying the sentences.

Listening for practice (5-7 minutes) • to practice pronuncianing whole sentences

Students will listen to the recording again and then practice reading the sentences. Students will then practice the conversation by taking the turn to be the shop assistant and the customer and the other way around.

Role Play (8-10 minutes) • to practise using the functional language and engage in a conversation

Students will be given two different cards. One person will be the shop assistant and the other person will be the customer. They will practice the role play and then perform in front of the class.
