Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan in the context of unusual achievements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in the context of achievements.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T refers to the title (unusual achievements) and ask Ss to discuss in teams the following question: Do you know somebody who has achieved something great? T nominates two students to give their opinion

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T chooses 3 challenging words from the text to cover Meaning and Form. T writes 3 sentences using each word (which will be in bold) and the meanings on the side so students can match the meaning with the word. T asks them: Why do you think that word goes with the meaning you choose? Is it a verb, noun, adjective, adverb?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T sends a link to a google form where Ss will have to match headings with the texts Ss will read to texts for a gist and fill out the google form Ss check answers in pairs OCFB

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

T provides questions for the Ss about the first 2 texts Ss discuss the questions in pairs T sends link to a google form where students will have to decide if the statements are true or false T

Post-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T provides speaking task for learners to respond to and discuss the contents of the text. (use Break Out rooms)
