Materials

Abc Google Jamboard
Abc Google Slides
Abc Google Form - Meaning Task
Abc Google Form - Text Activity

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will develop speaking fluency in the context of clarifying misunderstandings related to a shared travel itinerary

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will review and practice language used to clarify misunderstandings (i.e. say they didn't hear something, ask someone to repeat themselves, check if they understood correctly)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Screenshare PPT. Ask: What do you see in these pictures? What comes to mind? Record ss responses on Slide. Ask: Have you ever had a problem because you got the time wrong? If ss are hesitant to share, share a personal example. Ask: Was this man late on purpose? Or was it an accident? Accident. This is one kind of misunderstanding. Tonight we're going to read about some other misunderstandings and the language we can use to solve them.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Screenshare Form. Show 3 conversations. Ss should identify what the misunderstanding is for each conversation. Share Form link in chat. Ss have 3 min to submit. Give FB using Response Tool. Who did Anna want to speak to? Adriana. Who did Anna actually speak to? Paulina's Pizza Palace. CCQ: What was the misunderstanding? Wrong number Which hotel did Tom go to? The Felton Which hotel did Tom make his reservation at? The Sheldon CCQ: What was the misunderstanding? Wrong hotel What day is it today? July 4th What did did Elena think it was? July 3rd CCQ: What was the misunderstanding? Wrong date

Useful Language (7-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Screenshare Form #2. Did you notice the underline phrases? These are examples of language we can use to solve misunderstandings. Ss will read the conversations again, and match each phrase with its use. Share Form link in chat. Ss have 1 min to submit. Give FB in OC using Response tool. Are you saying ... ? Checking if you understood correctly Could you repeat that? Asking someone to repeat something I didn't catch that. Saying you didn't hear something Do you mean to tell me ... ? Checking if you understood something correctly Can you say that again? Asking someone to repeat something Screenshare PPT. Ask: For each of these, which part is fixed, and which can we change? Write Can you say + complement + again ?. Elicit an example using Can you repeat + complement formulation. Write Do you mean to tell me + complement ?. Elicit an example using Are you saying + complement formulation. Ask: Are these Yes/No questions or open-ended questions? Yes/No. Ask ss to unmute themselves. Drill each item and tell ss to listen for rising or falling intonation. After, ask which they heard. Rising.

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

We're going to do an activity where we go on vacation! We made our itinerary (or our plan), but each student only heard bits and pieces. You're missing some information, and you need to ask your partners to help you. Model example: Which information is Student A missing? The name of the cafe. He didn't catch the name of the cafe. What is the name of the cafe? Morningside Cafe. I didn't understand exactly. Can you say the name again? Morningside Cafe. Student A will fill in the blank, then it's Student B's turn. Screenshare Jamboard. Demonstrate how to navigate to find your own Board. Try not to look at anyone else's Board. Share Jamboard link in chat. Everyone is missing different information, so you need to speak with more than 1 person to fix everything. We will change the BORs every 4-5 min to try to complete the whole itinerary. I will try to give you a 1 min warning before the rooms change. As a reminder, paste formulations from the example in the chat: I didn’t catch the name of the cafe. I didn’t catch the time. When is breakfast again? Could you repeat that last part? Can you say the time again? Do you mean to tell me breakfast is at 8 am? Are you saying the cafe is called Morningside Cafe? Open BORs without time limit. Monitor for ss understanding, use of TL, and common errors related to formulations. Monitor for other formulations used to check understanding or clarify. Aim to switch BORs 3x.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

In OC, screenshare PPT. Elicit responses from ss to complete the itinerary together. Fill in the blanks. Give DEC and praise ss for their participation. Ask: Did you like our itinerary? Is there anything you would add for the next day?
