Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of play/go/do in the context of sports & activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sports & activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will project on google slides different photos of sports and activities and talk about my favourite sports and activities. I will then ask the learners to look at the pictures on the Google Slide and to answer 'what sports and activities can you see? have you ever tried any of the sports in the pictures? would you like to? why not?'

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will project a gist task on Google Slides with a simple text and ask them to individually fill in the gaps from the sentences and then conduct OCFB. This will encourage conversations between learners in a social context.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

This activity will engage the students to the target language which is play/do/go in context of sports & activities which I hope they will be already familiar with.

Clarification (6-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To clarify meaning I will show them photos of the different sports/activities and explain to them how to use the words play/do/go in this context. To clarify form I will explain to the students that they can use playing/doing/going in relation the context. For example, I am playing football/are they doing yoga? To clarify pronunciation I will model the activities highlighting the stress on the difficult part of the words and ask the students to repeat as a whole class. At the end of the lesson I will review the verb collocations that caused them difficulty in DEC.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will provide students with link to Google Forms with a photo of exercise 8B on page 138 asking them to decide which activities collocate with the verbs do/go/play. This practice would to check that students understand the correct collocation. After task, we will discuss in OCFB their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

After the controlled practice, we will check their responses in OCFB to check and make sure that the students understood how to use the correct collocation.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Using Exercise d on page 138 I will tell the students my opinion of activity a and b. For example. Running is fun. windsurfing is frightening. I will tell the students I will put them in BORs to complete the task in groups.
