Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for specific info and detail in the context of conversations at a party.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show pictures from SS book (A,B, and C) and ask the question: "Where do you think they are?" Why. This is to introduce the topic of party to the class.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will let SS know we will be listening to a short conversation at a party. But first we will go over some vocabulary together: Husband Accountant Neighbour/ neighbor Restaurant T. will also show SS pictures so they can have a clear understanding of the meaning as well as the form and pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Have SS listen the conversation for the first time and compete activity 2a on SB pg. 12. Teacher will send link to google form to complete activity. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IIHUBN85mtEa3cRWPoH9_LRGFKoR10_-3pAO56rh6gw/edit After recording ends, check answers with the answer key for SS to check their work themselves.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Have SS listen the conversation again, this time they will need to complete activity 2b. If a sentence is correct they will tick, but if the sence is wrong they must correct the mistake. After time is up, split them into breakout rooms and have them discuss their answers with their classmates (2-3 minutes) Once finished, return to main session and give feedback to the group

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put SS in breakout rooms (3-5 minutes) and have them discuss the following: Did you meet someone new at the last party you went to? If you don’t know anybody at a party, do you start conversations with strangers? Why or why not? What do you talk about? Bring SS back to main session and ask some to share what they discussed. Provide feedback to SS; pronunciation errors, etc.
