Description

In this lesson the Ss will write a newspaper article and and design a newspaper page.The lead in will allow the Ss to get an insight into events happening both globally and locally. This will be followed by analysing the structure and the general features of a newspaper article. Later, Ss will be encouraged to think about the language they will be using in a newspaper article and how they will produce and present their work.

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice using different idea cards in context of a newspaper article

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in context of news

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the names of different newspapers on PPT and elicit the topic of the lesson.- the news. Ss look through the slide and check they are aware of the newspapers. Ss work in pairs to share the latest news they are interested in. Monitor. Take general FB- Ss say whether their news was about business, media, sport,etc.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through scanning for a specific info

Show Slide 2- a newspaper article. Ss look through the article and try to identify the general features of a newspaper article. Draw their attention to the newspaper features cards . Ask them to label the features according to the cards given. Monitor and help where needed. FB-W/C

Useful Language (7-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive task

Show Slide 3.- elicit the topic of the news. Ss read through slide and check they are clear about the meaning- deal with any questions. Group the Ss according to the types of news. Give the Ss pictures related to the topics on the slide. Ss choose the picture and work in groups to think of a suitable headline for the news on it. Elicit the answers. Ss brainstorm what their news is going to be about.They do not share their ideas with other groups. FB- w/c.

Productive Task (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice writing.

Tell Ss that they will write a newspaper article about the topic they have just discussed and think about the page layout. Remind them to use the narrative tenses and the newspaper features. Ask them to choose one secretary in their group.ICQs Give Ss A4 papers and pictures. Warn them about timing.(Instruction:You have 10 minutes. Once the music has stopped, you need to put your newspaper page on the wall.)

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ask Ss to go around the room with their groups and read the other groups' work. Ss compare and discuss different news in terms of clarity and effectiveness. Deal with any questions in FB
