Main Aims

  • by the end of the lesson, students will have had clarification of the meaning, form, and pronunciation of family lexis in the context of family members and practiced them in controlled and freer practice exercise

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have been able to talk about their family members

Procedure

Lead in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, a photo of the teacher and their family will be showed to the student. The family members will be elicited from them by asking who is this? then drilling the word "father,mother,grandfather,..etc." The principle of Retrieval will be used in this stage, by showing them visuals/pictures of family members in order for the students to memorize them and learn them by heart

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes)

The students will be shown Flashcards of family members, when they see the flashcard they say the word of the family member. The principle of Multiple encounters will be applied here as the students encounter the words, see them, repeat them many times in order to remember them

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The students will be divided into pairs and given a picture of a big tree in which they will place the family member in it in its right place.

Free Practice (10-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Each student will be ready with pictures of their family members using their mobile phone. They will be asked to speak about their family members, their names, their age..etc. The principle of Association will be used in the Free practice part as they will personalize the task and speak about themselves and their own families
