Description

In this lesson, students will learn the use of present perfect with for and since. They will also contrast with the past simple thorugh a controlled practice of grammar.This will be followed by a semi-controlled speaking practice and finally a freer speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To introduce the use of present perfect with for and since in the context of pets

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice using "how long have you..." structure

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will show her own pet's pictures to arise Ss' interest and set the context -T will ask students to discuss and make predictions about these pictures (How long do you think have I had them?) -Ss will work in pairs -T will elicit responses and write model sentences on the board

Controlled grammar practice (7-8 minutes) • To get Ss to practice present perfect contasting with past simple

-T will give "complete the text" HOs -Ss will work individually and check in pairs WCF

Language clarification (4-5 minutes) • To highlight target language

-T will ask Ss to scan the text (The United States of animals-Ss will have already been given the text in the previous lesson) to find sentences with "for" and "since" -T will write them on the board to provide more examples about the TL -T will highlight target language through model sentences (written in the warm-up stage) focusing on meaning, form and pronunciation -T drills-choral-indv. repetition

Controlled grammar practice (4-6 minutes) • To practice grammar (for/since)

-Ss will get into two groups -T will give two groups of strips of papers (one group with since/for, the other group with time expressions) to each group to match -Ss will work in groups (competition is avoided to get them to internalize the TL) -Answer key

Semi-controlled speaking practice (10-13 minutes) • To practice speaking for accuracy

-T will give three uncompleted sentences and ask students to complete them in different ways -Ss will work in pairs, (even mingle) ask and answer the questions (delayed error correction as necessary)

Freer speaking practice (10-12 minutes) • To practice speaking for fluency

-T will ask Ss to find someone in the class whose life is most similar to theirs -Ss will mingle, ask questions and answer (e.g Are you married? Yes. How long have you been married? etc.) (Delayed error correction as necessary)

If time activity (Speaking) (6-9 minutes) • To practice speaking for accuracy

-T will give "find out which people..." HOs -Ss will mingle, ask and answer questions (Delayed error correction as necessary)
