Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Memories of food in the context of food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific vocabulary to understand some informal expressions from the text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by putting some pictures on the whiteboard about families making food together , and i will ask the students to tell me what does it represent . after that I will engage the students in a discussion where they will talk about their food memories with their friends or family , meanwhile i will be asking some questions like whats your favourite food ? what kind of food your mother used to cook for you when you were young ? do you remember any special kind of dishes your father used to cook for you ? do you still cook those dishes nowadays ?.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

i will show the students the picture on the hand out and ask them if they know "Emma Bunton " as she used to sing in the spice girls band, i will give them a little information about her after that i will give them the hand out (folded) and ask them to skim the text and find out the answers of the two questions given and i will ask them to check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

After checking the answers , i will go through the vocabulary given (glossary )and try to provide more clarification and i will try to explain to students the informality of those words (slang ) and in which situations they should use them , and I will explain why she used it .

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In this stage i will give the students instructions to read again carefully after that i will ask them to answer the second exercise, ten ( T/F) statements from a to j in pairs , and then check their answers in pairs , after that i'll do some ICQ's like ( what are you going to do ? , are you going to read the text ? , are you going to answer the question in pairs ? are you going to answer by true or false ?

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Finally i will ask the students to answer exercise 3 by rewriting the sentences from exercise 2 using the first person instead of the third person , but they will change the information so that the sentences are tru for them individually, after that i will ask them to share their sentences with their partners . the last thing i will ask the students some CCQ's like ( do we use informal words to talk to people other than family or friends ? , do we use the present tense to talk about our memories ?
