In this lesson, students learn how to use functional language in the context of expressing good and bad news.

Main Aims

  • Practicing functional language in the context of good and bad news

Subsidiary Aims

  • During this lesson, students improve their listening skills for gist.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • Introduce Ss to the context of the lesson.

T tells Ss about some good and bad news. Then Ss have to work in pairs to find some good and bad news.

Matching activity 1 (5-5 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of good and bad news.

Students have to match phrases which are outside the room with the handout they were given before. Students check their answers in pairs. WC FB

Drilling (5-5 minutes) • To provide a deeper understanding of meaning and pronunciation

Teacher project the answer key from the previous task on the board. He shows the stresses of the words and drills pronunciation.

Listening activity (5-5 minutes) • Improve Ss listening skills for gist

Teacher plays a audio recording. Ss have to match the 4 conversations from the audio recording to 4 pictures. Teacher plays the audio recording again. Now Ss have to listen for good news and bad news in the audio and write them in a table. Ss check their answers in pairs.

Gap fill activity (3-3 minutes) • To make Ss familiar how to respond to good and bad news.

Ss fill out a gapped text and match the free spaces with words from a box. This activity refers to the conversations from the audio recording they were listening before. Ss check their answers in pairs.

Drilling activity 2 (5-5 minutes) • Drilling how to respond to good and bad news

T uses the conversation from the previous task for drilling intonation and pronunciation.

Free practice - Exaggerate! (10-10 minutes) • Giving Ss a opportunity to used new learnt vocabulary

T gives Ss slips of paper with different situations. Ss work in pairs or small groups. 1 S giving the news, a other S is responding.
