Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of weekend activities

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll use pictures, prediction and personalization to engage Ss with the topic of "weekend activities". 1. Screenshare a G-Jamboard slide/presentation & Share LInk in Zoom chat. 2. Focus Ss on the Slide’s pictures. Ask Ss “What do you see?” (various activities, cinema, eating- out, walking..) 3. Focus Ss on the a new slide with pictures. (people speaking correspondence between people; email (Tim), text message (Simon), to-do list (Rachel), social media post-twitter (Emily)). "Ss imagine it is Monday morning". Ask, "Do you think these people are at work or or home?" "Do you think they are discussing their work or thier weekends?". 4. ask Ss: Where are they on Monday? Are they at work or at home? (at work). What are they talking about? What do you talk about on Monday morning? 5. Write down Ss' ideas on the whiteboard, try to elicit 'WEEKEND'.

Target Language Exposure -Gist Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

01. Share G-Jamboard Link, G-drive audio Link, and G-Forms T/F Link G-Jamboard Link: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1s6XXKcwBJqvFeKHBqZsYkvBOsUFLNAq36Q-nTSi6ECA/edit?usp=sharing Audio Files G-drive Link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XJTlMmSNzuyDG7eZah23Dq9AIzYJ2k8q?usp=sharing G-Forms T/F Link: https://forms.gle/4hzFR4PinJPvVMjF7 02. Ss can listen to the conversation (Google-drive audio Link) regarding Tim, Emily, Rachel, Simon. 03. Ss can look at the pictures and read A-D again. 04. Ss can listen to the conversation (Google-drive audio Link) regarding Tim, Emily, Rachel, Simon. "We will listen to the audio one time and then in BORs figure out what is True/False" 05. Ask ICQs to make sure students have understood the activity: if no clarifications are needed, play the audio, make sure Ss have G-Links for BORs task. 07. After BORs lead a brief OCFB session so students can share their answers. 08. Project the answer key but avoid slowing down the pace of the lesson. 09. In OCFB, provide a space for Ss to express what they remember from audio. Ask students what they remember about the audio. Provide options to students to grade the language to their level and prevent confusions. a— How was Tim's weekend? Was he healthy or ill? b— How was Emily's weekend? Exciting or boring? 10. Provide corrections and feedback on the spot to maximise students' understanding

Target Language Clarification (Functional Language) MFPA (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Today we are focusing on learning and practicing expressions to show interest and follow-up questions in day-to-day conversations. When we are speaking with our friends, family, or colleagues we show interest in what they are saying. We also continue conversations by asking follow-up questions to find out more information. So, we are going to review and practice the some expressions and questions and responses. 1. Focus Ss on two sentences in G-Jamboard (MFPA slide) 6. "Rachel stayed in a hotel", and "She went to the theatre". Ask, are sentences past or present or future? Review past simple regular versus past simple irregular in two examples from text. Review rules briefly. 7. Ss go into BOR to complete G-Forms Matching Tenses Task in pairs G-Forms Match Tenses: https://forms.gle/WBkJMby8RnThpP189 8. End BORs and repeat with new BORs for task G-Forms Link: Weekend Expressions - Meaning https://forms.gle/trfxXiri1vaeadp17

Controlled Practice (5-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sent Ss to BORs for task task 1. Listen to conversation and responses. Match responses by dragging them in G-Jamboard. Audio Files G-drive link: Audio CD2 track13 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XJTlMmSNzuyDG7eZah23Dq9AIzYJ2k8q?usp=sharing task 2. Send Ss to BOR's to complete meaning -drag/drop of expressions G-Jamboard Slide 8/16 with students as review/DEC/OCFB.. task 3. Send Ss to BORs for task Ss read conversation dialogue. Demo how to complete task with answer. (Circle bold option that suits sentence, and descramble sentences to complete parts of dialogue missing)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Sent Ss to BORs for task Work in pairs to demonstrate sentence structure using phrases learned today using the "PAST SIMPLE TENSE" referencing past activities of the weekend, last week, yesterday, etc. Show demo conversation in Jamboard slide and Demo how to complete task. (Highlight there are slides at end to reference.) Ask partners questions and remember one thing to share with class.
