Description

In this lesson, students learn about the simple past tense regular verbs through guided discovery based on a text about two teens travelling to the wrong Sydney. the class starts with a discussion of students knowledge of Sydney, Australia. this is followed by reading the article and discovering the teen's final destination. During this stage, students will be exposed to sentences from the paper and will drill on grammar terms and clarify the target language. Finally, there will be controlled practice through sentence reformation and free exercise via a final role-play speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Pictures of Flag, world maps and famous landmarks in Australia. Show ss pictures of Australia - Sydney Opera house, koala, kangaroo, aboriginals culture Elicit Australia and Sydney. Find out what ss know already about Australia. Could you name famous cities in Australia? Guess the flight time. from Cairo to Sydney is 18 hours. London to Sydney 22 hours. Introduce new vocabulary - Ticket, Landed, expensive, cheap, information desk, check-in

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell ss they're going to read a true story which was all over the news all over the world. Ask ss to read the story alone. Tell ss they have 5 minutes to read the article. Hand out #1 ICQ - is the story true or false? will you work in pairs or alone? how much time do you have to read the article 2 minutes or 5 minutes? after asking the ss if Emma and Raoul went to Sydney Australia? Play Track 5.6 - play the end of the story, where were they? Discover that the teens went to Nova Scotia, then ask the whole class do they think it is easy to make a mistake like this?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask ss to read the story alone again quickly and highlight past tense verbs. Explain that the story will be in the past simple and ask ss to underline past tense verbs. ICQ - what words will you highlight? are you going to read quickly or slowly?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Give ss handout number 2. question 2a. Drill the example sentences CCQ and ask ss was the past simple of want, don't and do. Tell ss they have 2 minutes for this exercise. Ask ss to complete the past simple column with highlighted verbs from the story. Tell ss to work alone. Check answers with the whole class. Write the three sentences on the board. for each question ask the ss whether it is a negative, positive or question sentence. after eliciting the correct answers, and drilling the sentences hand out the answer key.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Handout number 3. questions 2c. give instructions - Work in pairs. ask ss to complete questions with was/were or Did. tell 5 minutes to work on exercise. demonstrate questions, 1, 2 and 4. ensuring the ss understood the task on hand. use the board for demonstrations. explain the sound goes down and up for questions. ICQ - Are you going to work alone or in pairs? what words are you going to use to fill in gaps? How long will you spend on this exercise, 5 or 10 minutes?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Handout number 4. question 4b. Five questions on the slide. Demonstrate this section carefully. Tell ss to ask T the first question. T to use the figures to demonstrate correct rhyme. T answers, yes, I did. Ask ss to as follow up questions using whereto, when etc Tell ss to ask more questions, such as, who did you go with? Ask the following follow-up question, why did you go there? Show extra questions on the board. ICQ- Pratacing speaking So do you need a pen? Are you going to speak to a minimum of four people? Are you going to talk to 2 people or five people? Play background music monitor students and make a note of any wrong past tense form, write these errors on the board and correct them
