Project Based Learning: History of Hip-Hop

Description

The students will team up in several groups to create a project about the history of Hip-Hop music from the 90s till 2010.

Main Aims

  • 1. To research and work collaboratively on a project. 2. To present a final product/project.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a presentation in the context of history of Hip-Hop music.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. What do you know about Hip-Hop music? 2. Do you have a favourite Hip-Hop song or singer? (I might ask the students to play the song for us or show us a picture of the singer).

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. The students will conduct initial research on Hip-Hop on the internet. 2. They will create a list of the most famous Hip-Hop stars in the US. 3. The students will then make a list of the most popular hits of Hip-Hop music ( Teacher guidance is provided to avoid exposure to bad language).

Useful Language (20 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1. The students will be engaged in their research and working on their projects at this stage. 2. Meanwhile, I'll provide support on emerging languages/vocabulary. 3. I'll provide feedback mainly on fluency.

Productive Task(s) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

At this stage, the students will present the final project. They will have to assign roles and a team speaker before presenting their work. It will last for a whole class.

Feedback and Error Correction (10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

At the end of the project, I'll provide general feedback to everyone that includes key points from each presentation.
