Description

In this lesson, students listen for gist and details, and practice speaking about events in the past. Pictures and flash cards will be used in this lesson. The lesson begins with different pictures posted on the board and the students will try to guess what each picture is about. Then Different activities follow to practice the listening skills targeted. The lesson ends with production activity to recycle the language skills learned.

Main Aims

  • To help students practice listening for gist and for detail to people telling stories about their possessions.

  • To help students practice speaking in the context of talking about events in the past.

Procedure

Warmer/lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher invites sts to the board to discuss a narrative of images of a burning house. After discussing enough, sts sit and some ideas are elicited. Then one sts write a selected word on the board to reflect the theme of the lesson. Any word relevant to 'precious, valuable, expensive, etc' is acceptable.

Exposure (4-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target listening through situations

Now that the students have been introduced to the unit "Personal possession", they will be exposed to the skill of listening for gist. Teacher writes four general questions on the board and asks the sts to read them and prepare for the listening. Sts listen and get the answers. PW: after listening, sts share some general answers.

Highliting (1-1 minutes) • to draw students' attention to the target activity

The teacher makes it clear that they are going to listen twice to the listening activity that introduces the skill of listening for gist, which is to listen for general ideas.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify meaning and pronunciation

In case needed, teacher clarifies the meaning and pronunciation of the task. Teacher can write the points on the board and deal with them according to the problem.

Personal Possession: Controlled Practice (20-30 minutes) • To check and prepare students for more listening practice

Teacher prepares students for the listening activities. St should know that they will listen twice to the activity in order to get the main aim of the lesson, which is listening for specific information. Listening 1: Pre-listening Teacher asks sts: "From the title, what do you think you will listen too?" Teacher explains briefly what listening for specific information means. (Sts. do not need to listen to everything but for specific information). Teacher chest HO, which will be cut into slips and explains the task. HO will be handed out to students. 4 questions will be written on the board. Sts. read the questions. While listening: Sts. listen and focus their attention on specific information (the 4 questions). After listening sts. in PG will discuss the questions. Then the sts. will come to the board where the slips will be pasted on and organize them into the correct category. 2nd listening: Chest HO, show them a dialogue which has some words taken away from it and explain that they should listen and fill in the empty spaces according to what they hear. Vocab. is introduced asking students to pronounce- stress- repeat. Post listening: Students will discuss in groups why do they think it is important to the people in the task their possession. Activity 2: Sts. will be given some answers and they make 5 questions to ask. ex. How much is your valuable possession? Students will read the text for 3 minutes, have one student explain what they will do. Give students a chance to think about their answers. Put sts. into groups and let them discuss their answers. PW: students will discuss their answers.
