Main Aims

  • To provide exposure to and practice of present perfect simple using just, already, yet

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a small groups in the context of past experiences and future plans using just, already, yet

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Open class conversation answering the prompt: 'what do you spend money on?' give example of myself saving up and spending any extra income on traveling because that is what I enjoy most

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss listen 1x to short recording of isolated sentences using TL of present perfect with just, already and yet. Fill in the blanks with what they heard. Show them the text with blanks first, then play and then show answers, Ask if any questions about the answers. Ss listen 1x to longer recording of people in more of a dialog using the TL. Listen this time to answer the following questions: Why does she have to call her friend back in 5 minutes? Why doesn’t she want to go to the supermarket with him? Why does he ask his friend to wait to leave?

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit from Ss the meaning of just, already, yet, clarify and answer questions as needed Elicit from Ss the form of the present perfect simple tense (have/has + past participle), clarify and answer questions as needed Show timeline for tense Show, elicit, model, drill IPA and stress for just, already, yet

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss unscramble 3 sentences which use the TL, working individually. Check answers in OCF nominating students to read the sentences they came up with, and then put the correct unscrambled sentences on the screen. Thanks for the invitation to the shops, but I have already bought enough clothes for summer. She hasn’t yet learned the bus schedule for her trip to the city. We had just finished dinner when the power went out in the restaurant!

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss speak in BORs answering the following questions using the TL 4 minutes Is there somewhere you want to visit, but you haven’t yet? Why haven’t you already visited? Is there anywhere you’ve already visited that you would visit again? Why would you visit again? If you had won the lottery as a 18 year old, would you have already spent the money in a year, or saved for the future? Switch partners in BORs with same questions so Ss can refine language and practice more, 4 minutes
