Materials

Abc Empower A2
Abc Bingo Handout
Abc A box of useful expressions for making suggestions

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about making arrangements in the context of television

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make students feel comfortable while they are making arrangements by providing the necessary vocabulary and expressions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As a warm-up, teacher uses a brief presentation on Mentimeter. Ss will enter the code on the screen so that they can easily access the material. Teacher shortly mentions what is going to be covered in the lesson and then want students to rate their moods from 1-10.

Pre-Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

As the first listening focuses on the chat about the favorite TV programs of the characters, T wants students to play a bingo game in which they are going to talk about their preferences about TV. While students are doing the activity, teacher opens a timer on the board.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be introduced the first part of the video and they will be asked to answer this question: "Do Martina, Annie and Dan all like the same TV programme?". They will be raising their hands to answer the question.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be shown the same video and after video, they will be asked to do true-false and detailed questions on the book. After they complete the activity, they will be asked to do a pair-check and discuss the questions. They will be shown the answers on the board.

Post-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will be shown a Wordwall activity which is about the useful expression that they have heard in the listening part. They will be asked to match these expressions individually and they will discuss which questions or sentences are used for making suggestions and saying yes to suggestions.

Productive/Freer Practice (5-10 minutes) • To make students practice what they have learnt so far

T asks pairs to come to the board and they will be asked to choose a paper in a box. On these papers useful expressions for making suggestions are written. They will ask the questions written on the paper to their partner and then the other partner is going to choose a paper and do the same.
