Description

In this lesson ss will practice lexis to describe what they like and what they don´t like (+) verb "ing."

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of phrases that describe like/dislike + verb+ing/nouns.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to talk about things they like and don´t like using verb+ing and nouns in the context of a dating show.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss an image of "12 Corazones" TV program. Ask ss if they know what this program is about and ask them to share ideas and write these on the board. Possible ideas... -Meet new people. -Find out what they like and don´t like. -Finding love. -It like a game. Would you ever appear on a program like this? Why or why not?

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Read the phrases in the chart first together and explain that as they read they will be ticking the things that Mark likes and the things he does´t like in a chart. Give ss 3 min to read the text. They will discuss their answers in BORs in pairs or groups depending on the size of the class. CCQ- Will you check while you read or after? Check answers back in OC.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: Show ss a cline with the phrase "I hate" as 1 and "I love" as 7. Each ss will have the phrases on their own jamboard and they will move the phrases to the corresponding numers on the cline. 1- I hate... 2- I dont like... 3-...is/are OK 4- I like... 5- I quite like... 6- I really like... 7- I love... Check OC once everyone has finished. Mention that we can also use the word "enjoy" to talk about things we like doing. (6min) Form: Explain to ss that we can use verb+ing or a noun after the phrase. Before the phrase "is/are OK" There will be two sentences written on the board and T will nominate ss to identify the phrase, verb+ing, or noun in the sentences and highlight with different colors. Share another jamboard and tell ss that they will do the same (highlighting) with 2 more sentences. 1. I love reading. 2. I don´t like parties. Check OC. (5min) CCQ-Can we sayI like the books? Pronunciation: There will be complete sentences with the TL written on the board with stress marks where needed. First, ss will hear the stressed words and repeat. Then, they will hear the whole sentence with intonation and repeat. (3min) 1- I hate shopping for clothes. 2- I dont like video games. 3- Running is ok. 4- I quite like dance music. 5- I like cats. 6- I really like cooking. 7- I love Chinese food.

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will play a wordwall game where they complete the sentences using the correct phrase according to the emoji that they see accompanied by it. They will do this individually, then check answers with OC.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask ss to imagine that they are on the TV show "12 Corazones" or that they are creating their profile on a dating app like tinder, bumble, and match.com. Share my own example and word bank for support. Ss will work with a partner and share things about themselves that they like and don´t like. Give ss 2 min to write down some ideas using the phrases and verbs+ing/nouns before they start the freer practice in BORs. Conduct OCFB on content and language. ICQ- Are you going to write complete sentences or ideas? Are you going to ask your partner questions?/No Are you going to share your ideas in complete sentences?/Yes
