Main Aims

  • • By the end of the lesson, ss will have practised adverbs of frequency in the context of healthy lifestyles.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To practise reading for gist and specific information

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

# Show the ss some pictures and ask them different questions. - What do you think? Are they young people? Do they follow a special life style? -Do you know people live long lives? Ex: 1a Ask ss to look at the photo of the oldest man Takanashi and tell me What nationality is he? How old do you think he is? - Elicit the answers and tell them He's Japanese. - He's 103 years old. # Ask them to work in pairs for 2 minutes.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Make cards of the adverbs of frequency: They should be the size of half a piece of paper. Each card should have one adverb. always sometimes usually often hardly ever never Tell the ss that one side of the wall is 0% and the other end is 100%. They have to place the cards between these two numbers. For example, always is 100%. Allow the ss to work alone for 2/3 minutes. Then show the answer key. It’s in the teacher’s book.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

. 0% 100% never hardly ever sometimes often always Drill the pronunciation of the adverbs.

Clarification (5-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-hardly ever I hardly ever go to the cinema. I go twice a year. Do you think it's a little or more? Little -Ask the ss for one sentence from the first paragraph of the reading text using always and one using never. Write them on the board. Takanashi always walks three kilometers a day. He is never stressed. Ask the ss to tell me the grammar words – Takanashi always walks three kilometers a day. Subject( pronoun) + adverb of frequency + verb -Show the ss that the adverbs of frequency always comes before the verb / between the subject an the verb like the previous examples. - Also I will notice that they come only after verb TO BE( am, is, are) He is never stressed. S+ Verb to be + adverb of frequency I will tell them that (sometimes & usually) can come at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes she takes a taxi. Usually we use Uber.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ex1d. Get the ss to make sentences about themselves. Demo carefully with the whole class, please. SS write their sentences and check with each other in pairs. Monitor carefully because there is no answer key. Ask the ss if their sentences were similar or different.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ex2 Reading Do 2a and 2b. (this text will prepare them for the speaking task) Demo. Now pre-teach: portions, martial arts and meditate. Ex4. First ss have to choose the correct answers about themselves. 2 minutes Next, they ask each other questions. They can walk around asking each other. Demo both tasks carefully.
