This is a grammar lesson whose intention is to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and to interact with an authentic text.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of the past tense of be: was and were in the context of their last vacation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading in the context of last vacations.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet Ss and start the lesson by showing two pictures: Hawaiian Cruise and Tour Europe I will ask the following question: - Which vacation would you like to take? Why? I will model an answer. - I would like to take the Hawaiian Cruise because I like to swim. Ss will share their ideas.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask Ss to read a conversation and answer the following questions: - Did Kate enjoy her trip? Yes - Who did Kate travel with? Phil Ss will share their ideas. I will deliver open class feedback.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask Ss to underline the adjectives they find in the conversation. I will ask students if they think was and were can be interchangeable. For example: It were fantastic - The beaches was beautiful I will deliver open class feedback.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will conduct meaning, form, and pronunciation. Meaning: I will show some expressions. I will ask some CCQs to clarify the meaning: - Does the word was refer to one or two things? - Does the word were refer to one or two things? Form: I will ask some CCQs to clarify the form: - What is the past tense of is? - What is the past tense of are? Pronunciation: I will clarify the meaning of was and were I will model the pronunciation, ask some Ss to repeat, re-model and drill.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask Ss to complete an activity on Google Form. I will model the answer to the exercise of each part. I will ask if they have doubts about the activity. Ss will do the activity. Ss will work in pairs and compare their answers in Breakout Rooms. I will deliver open class feedback in the main room.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask Ss to imagine they took one of the vacations they choose at the beginning of the lesson. They will describe their imaginary vacation mentioning the following information: trip - weather - food - people - places - entertainment. I will model an example of what they have to do. Ss will discuss in pairs in Breakout Rooms.

Delayed Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To correct mistakes

I will conduct DEC. I will use a board to write and correct some mistakes made during the free practice. I will ask if there are any questions left. If there are, I will address them. If not, I will thank students for their time and say goodbye.
