Description

In this lesson students learn about reading for understanding through a text. They will use a productive skill (speaking ) to talk about the stress in their life and jobs. The lesson will start with a discussion about stressful jobs. They will read for gist and understand . At the end , they will write about the stress in their jobs.

Materials

Abc Talking about jobs and pictures

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information reading practice using a text about "Stress" in the context of jobs .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice controlled speaking for accuracy about stress in life and jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask each student about his job and ask him " Do you like your job ?" I write some jobs on the board and ask them "Which one of these jobs is more tiring?" I will put some printed pictures about a man and a woman who suffer from stress .I will ask my students "What do you think these two persons suffer from ?" I will ask my students to work in pairs then discuss them about their answers . I elicit their answers and write some on the board .

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives his students some elicited vocabulary (accountant,computer teacher, beauty therapist, programmer,gardener ,police officer ,and unemployed person). T writes ....(Being a doctor is stressful because .................... . He asks his students to complete the sentence and write about other words . Students work in pairs.T uses CQs " Are you going to listen or write ?" T asks each one to answer alone then they check in pairs..

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks his students to skim the text in two minutes to answer the question :" What is the most common cause of stress?" Ans : Para 4 line 27 . T uses CQ : Are you going to read fast or slowly ? Ss say Fast. T asks Ss to read the text but before reading he asks them to think about a title for the text from the the three choices : A)Adrenaline and cortisol. B)Are you suffering from stress? C)The most stressful jobs . T asks Ss to work in three groups to find the correct answer . Then he gives the feedback about the correct one .B)Are you suffering from stress?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed.

T asks Ss to read the questions in exercise 3 and then scan the passage for specific information . T gives Ss 5 m to read the passage and find the answers .T divides Ss into three groups and asks Ss to answer the questions . T asks each group to send one of them to write answer for each question by turn till the end .

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T wiil provide Ss with some suggestions come from books about stress . T asks them " Which ones work for you ? T asks them to work individually then asks them to swap the sheets and discuss with each other about their answers.
