Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of will/won't in the context of agreeing on a future plan.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Tokyo Highlights in the context of visiting a new city.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Teacher greets students. T introduces the topic by asking ss what comes to their minds when they talk about Tokyo, and shows pictures of Tokyo Highlights. For them to decide which one to visit.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T tells students that they'll listen to a convesation between two friends who will meet in Tokyo. The recording is played for them to answer two gist questions. OCF is done for ss to share their answers with the class. (The audio can be played twice if necessary.) T tells ss that they are going to listen for more detail information and shows them 5 detail questions about the recording. Ss read the questions before listening to the conversation. T demonstrates the activity by pausing the audio and elliciting the answer to the first question. T shows the correct aswers for students to check their own work.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language.

T shows incomplete sentences from the conversation for students to read. Ss make guesses about what word is the correct for each sentence. T plays the recording for students to check their predictions and to complete correctly. *Option: students write their guesses on the chat before listening.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss are shown the complete TL language samples. T asks if they are about the present or the future. Now ss have to match them to the correct uses of will and shall. The first two are answered with the whole class. T shows more examples and asks Concept questions.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are put in pairs (student A and B) To choose the correct reply for a list of sentences. Student A reads out the sentences to students B who chooses and reads the correct reply. Then Students B reads out their sentences and Student A replies. Ss do the activity in BOR. Fast finishers think of another possible way to reply to each sentence. Answers are checked in OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T sets the task and demonstrate by providing useful phrases: BOR. In pairs SS talk about visiting a city. One student makes offers and suggestions about about places to visit, where and what to eat. The other choses what places to visit and both agree on a plan. Ss switch roles to agree on another plan. *Option: The activity is repeated with a different pair. T monitors and selects language samples for DEC. Content Feedback and DEC is carried out.
