Magical moments
pre-intermediate/intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be reminded how to talk about long-lasting situations from the past (Past Continuous). They will also practise their vocabulary related to travelling and holiday activities they know from the previous class.

Materials

Abc High Note 2 Student's Book with recordings from the student's book.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of the use of Past Continuous.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review vocabulary related to travelling and holidays.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Each student is asked to say one word from the previous lesson. It is vocabulary related to travelling and holiday activities. Students are not allowed to say the words their predecessors have already said. If a student says a word that has already been used they are given 5 more seconds to provide another word. The winners are the three last students, those who can provide the greatest number of words.

Pre-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. The teacher reminds the use and the components of the Past Continues tense. The students are obliged to know it after their course of English in primary school, but some of them still make mistakes in the usage. Then they are reminded of the affirmative and negative sentences and questions. 2. The teacher asks the students to check in pairs if they understand the holiday activities phrases included in the box (ex. 1 p. 35). 3. Then she asks the students to use the vocabulary in Exercise 1 to talk about the things they were doing during their last holiday (in pairs). 4. The teacher asks students to look at the photos and guess what kind of holiday stories they may talk about. Two or three students say their guesses.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students are asked to read the text. After that, the teacher asks if their presuppositions concerning photos were correct.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed and inference reading tasks

In the initial part of the lesson students were reminded that the Past Continuous tense was used in the two contexts: 1. To give the background to a story 2. To say that someone was in the middle of an action at a specific time. Now the teacher asks the students to find in the text the sentences that match with two uses of the Past Continous. Students work individually, then compare their answers in pairs. After that, they check it with a teacher. This slow process helps students to remember the use of the tense better.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher asks students to think about the holiday time stories they presented during the previous lesson. Now, their task is to add to it two sentences in Past Continuous tense. They may recall their journey or holiday activities they were doing for a longer period of time. The idea is they need to join the new sentences into the old, well-known story they have demonstrated in their presentations.
