Description

In this lesson the Ss will review question forms and be introduced to a lexis related to the cultures of a city. The Ss will also be given a speaking task using this information talking about a major city they know about.

  • to review question with be, modal, simple present and past simple verbs and to introduce new lexis in the context of cultural cities

  • to allow Ss speaking practice by discussing cultural cities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce yourself to the Ss. Put Picture of my city on the W/B. "This is the city where I am from. St. Louis is a cultural city in America. Every student in America learns about the culture in my cty." Have Ss come to the board and think of questions to ask me about my city. If Ss cannot think of a question have Ss draw a question from the question pile. Every Ss asks a question. Elicit F/B

Exposure/Hightlight (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target grammar through questions from the text

Hand out ex2 "Now you will match the sentences with the grammar points."(model) while Ss are working write question on the board Hand out answer key. Ss check their answers with a partner(1 per group) Elicit FB "How did you do? Good/So-So/Bad" Have Ss write on W/B the grammar rules for these questions. CCQs Do these questions ask for information? Do these questions ask for information that you know or don't know? Model the natural stress of these questions without B/W. Drill Ss.

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target grammar

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Write words on W/B international ancient tourist designer cultural modern handout cutouts "All of these words were mentioned in the listening. Match the cutouts to the words on the boards" Play recording 1.09 "Now listen to the recording and check your answers." Ask, "Do any of these answers need to change?" Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Handout Cultural City Questions Ss work individually to answer the question. "Now think of a Cultrual City you know well and answer the questions. If you don't know about another Cultural city you can choose a city in Turkey that is not Istanbul." Ss work with a partner to discuss their selected cities. "Now with a partner, tell each other about the city you chose."

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss discuss their cities with another S in the class and the other S ask follow up questions. Ss stand in pairs and switch after the time is up "Now with another student tell each other about your cities. When you listen ask follow up question for more information.
