Main Aims

  • At the end of the lesson, students will have practiced reading for gist and details in the context of Losing the battle for survival.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to learn new vocabulary related to the text and have a discussion about how to save red squirrels from extinction.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A youtube video, Students are going to watch a Youtube video about whether grey squirrels are invasive and then have a group discussion about the video and try to guess what the reading text might be about.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows various visuals including the ones in the book and asks ss to guess the content by looking at the visuals and the questions prepared by the teacher. Ss work in groups of 3. At the end, T gives feedback. Questions are as in the following: 1- What does "invasive species" mean? 2- What do you think the text is going to be about? 3- What kind of text do you think is it?

Pre-Reading - Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with some blocking vocabulary

T tells that they are going to read an article about invasive species focusing on grey squirrels and how they affect other species and the environment but before doing it they need to make sure they learn some useful vocabulary to understand t the article better. T asks ss to do ex 1 on page 21 and tell them not to use dictionaries at first. Once they are done, they can check their answers with their pairs and use dictionaries if they need to. Quizlet will be done to furher practise the new words.

While-Reading (13-15 minutes) • Providing students with gist and specific information regarding tasks

Ss read the article and answer both the main ideas and detailed questions in ex 3 and 4 individually and then share their answers in their groups. Feedback is given on the screen by the teacher.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks students to read the questions in ex 5 and choose 2 of them in groups of 4 and have a discussion. Then, students will tell their points to other students in the classroom.
