Description

In this lesson students will learn useful vocabulary related to the topic of health and fitness. Then, read an article for gist / main idea / making inferences.

Main Aims

  • To provide inference, detailed and gist reading practice using a text about the importance of regular exercise

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Health and fitness vocabulary in the context of Physical exercise
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Health and exercise

Procedure

Warm Up / Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use the page 106 warm up PPT. Teacher goes through the questions on slide one, give the students a few minutes to discuss in pairs and then get class feedback. Then, watch the video in slide 3 and get class feedback

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible, activating the schemata

Ex2 Students look at the pictures and teachers elicits the topic of the reading. Students then label the pictures. Teacher then elicits how each activity could be related to the topic and predict what might be in the article

While-Reading (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ex 3. 4. 5. 6 Students skim the article quickly for the topic and answer Ex 3. Students check with a partner then Teacher gives the answer. Students read the article again for gist and match the paragraphs Ex 4 Teachers reads the questions Ex 5 highlighting keywords. Students then scan the article to answer the questions. Check with partners, then get feedback from class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned by making inferences

Teacher reads through the information with students checking for understanding. Students then discuss the 2 questions in pairs or small groups and then gets class feedback

Pre Teaching Vocabulary (0-0 minutes) • Provide Students with blocking vocabulary

T tells that they are going to read a news article about the importance of health and exercise. But before starting to read they need some words to learn to understand the text. First, T asks Ss to read the target words and their definitions on the book and then shares the link of the wordwallnet. where they can practice the words. This can even be assigned prior to the lesson, so students come to the lesson having learned the worsd
