TP6: Functional Language

Description

In this lesson Ss will be given the opportunity to learn and practice functional language in the context of deciding what to do using listening and speaking practice through dialogue and target language lexis.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for Deciding what to do in the context of A fun day out

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of What would you prefer to do

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be shown a series of images from the Ts ideal planned day out in Mexico City. Ss will be asked to consider their location and think of a few places they would like to visit on their idea of a great day out . Ss will be introduced to the TL phrases "I'd like to __", "I'd prefer to ___ rather than ____."

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will listen to a an audio clip of a family deciding what they would like to do for a day out together. T will elicit lexical phrases used in audio that will help Ss identify what the family chooses to do / not to do. In this Gist Task they will be exposed to TL of "Do you want to..?" "Would you like to..." "I'd rather..." "I'd like to..." listen, and check for order of places mentioned before checking answers in pairs. T will show answer key for Ss to check their work.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will use highlighting of TL from dialogue before clarification stage using CCQs, "Do the parents give their son options to choose what to do?" "Does the son prefer to stay at home? Ss will be given the opportunity to test what they already know using a guided discovery activity sheet to identify the M, F, P of three TL lexical phrases: "Would you like to.." "Do you want..." "I'd rather..." Ss will work in pairs to complete worksheet while T monitors each BOR. T will show answer key for each M,F,P and give any feedback of good language and where errors were mentioned during pair work.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will be given the opportunity to imagine a day off in pairs/small groups to practice with TL , "Would you like to.." and "I'd rather..."through drilling by examples of taking turns with question and response from key of suggested activities. Each pair will take turns as Student A and Student B in order to have practice asking and responding.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be given the opportunity to develop and apply TL to their personal lives by planning a group day out in small BORs. Ss will be asked to consider and choose : where they would like to go what they would like to do when they would like to go where and when to meet how to get there Ss will be given five minutes to plan as a group and WB five minutes to present in OCFB. Teacher will monitor groups to make sure TL is being used and presented when planning. In OCFB, other Ss will be given opportunity to hear different preferences of travel and exploration from each group.
