Description

In this lesson, students learn about irregular verbs in the Past Simple in the context of a profile of a real life millionaire-Ben Way through guided discovery. Students focus on some irregular verbs in Past Simple, read and listen for some information about a real life millionaire-Ben Way. Student also listens for specific information about Ben Way.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of irregular verbs in the Past Simple in the context of a profile of a real life millionaire through guided discovery

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice in the context of an interview with Ben Way and to provide learners speaking practice about their past actions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher starts lesson with some pictures about the past in İzmir, Rihanna's childhood, etc. He elicits the time and what is happening in the photos. In the photo, the time is past. This focuses students to get ready a lesson about past. Then, Ben Way's photo is presented. Students look at the photo and try to predict who he is, he is rich,etc.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text and a photo

Teacher presents the context through a picture and a short paragraph. Students look at the paragraph and read about Ben Way. Teacher elicits the information about Ben Way. Students discuss this question in pairs: What were his ups and downs ? Teacher gives feedback.

Guided Discovery - Focusing the Ss to the target language (5-10 minutes) • To focus students on the target language and discover the rules by themselves

In this stage, teacher gives Ss handouts about meaning-function-form of the target language. Students read the marker sentences and try to catch the language points in that target language. Teacher monitors and guides Ss but the aim is students' discovering. Then each student answers a question. The questions are answered by whole class. Teacher gives feedback and be sure that the students understand the meaning - function - form of the target language.

Practise 1 Irregular Verbs (3-5 minutes) • To enable get to know the irregular verbs.

Teacher shows the list of base forms and students try to fill in the blank using the irregular form of the verbs. They work in pairs.Teacher observes, correct the mistakes on the spot. This is a short stage in which Ss meet the irregular forms of some verbs.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To enable students use the target language in a controlled exercise.

Students have a handout about Ben Way. They try to complete the blanks using the verbs in paranthesis. This is a PW because Ss still need to work and discover together. Teacher observes and corrects the mistakes on the spot. He guides about the correct form of the verbs.

Listening for Specific Details (5-10 minutes) • To focus the students specific information about Ben Way and to provide them a listening practise in the context of Past Simple

Teacher gives clear instructions about the task and then students listen to the interview carefully take notes about the details they can learn about Ben Way. They check their answers with their partners and teacher gives feedback in the end if necessary.

Controlled Practise 2 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with controlled activities about the target language

Students have handouts and they try to answer the questions individually. Teacher observes them , correct any mistakes on the spot.

Freer Practices 1-2 (8-10 minutes) • To enable Ss produce their own language using target language

This stage is for student production. Teacher gives the task with clear instructions. In the first activity. Students make true sentences about themselves and compares their answers with a partner. In the second activity ,students ask questions eachother starting with 'When did you last....?' and the time expressions. Teacher must check whether Ss know the meaning of time expressions. Then, a student tells the class somethings he/she learned about his/her partner. This will be a pairwork. Teacher observes and in the end, gives delayed feedback.
