Description

In this lesson, students will develop the reading subskills of gist and detail through an academic text in the context of real world news.

Materials

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice for asking and answering questions in the context of real world news.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask ss about the previous listening activity. Nominate 4 ss to quickly mention the general idea of each newshead 1-4. 1-train crash 2-storms 3-two 80 year olds lost at sea 4-a man who won the lottery. Next, T will share the 4 pictures a-d on pg.52 on her screen. She will ask ss to read the two headlines of the texts on pg.53. Ss will guess which picture corresponds to the correct headline and match them using google slides.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will go to a breakout room with a partner and they will answer a google form sheet to get familiar with challenging and/or new vocabulary. There will be six words and two possible answers for each one. Ss must choose the word that is similar or has the closest meaning to the word in bold. missing-damage-couple-dog biscuits-choose-millionaire. Back in the main sesion T will give feedback on the correct answers and will practice the pronunciation of these words. CCQ-Will you select the word that has the same meaning or the opposite meaning? Will you work individually or talk about your answers with your partner?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will tell Ss they have 5-6 minutes to read both texts. Once they finish reading, T will share their answers form the lead in and nominate ss to answer the following questions... Now that you have read a little more, do you still agree that this picture best matches the headline? Why or why not?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will assign half of the ss to read text 1 (group A) and the other half to read text 2 (group b). While they read, they will have to answer the questions assigned to them and write these answers on the google slide they are given. (5min) Once they have all answered the questions, T will send ss in pairs to breakout rooms (1 S from group A and 1 from group B) and they will ask their partner the questions from the opposite text (the one they didn´t read in detail and the questions they didn´t answer) and write the answer for these questions. By the end of this stage all students must have all 10 questions answered.(5min) Back in the main sesion, we will check the answers together. (3min)

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

For this stage, Ss will go to a breakout room with a partner and each ss will imagine that they are one of the people form the text. (lost at sea or won the lottery with their dog) They will ask one another the following question: Scenario text 1- Who was missing with you at sea? Where did the helicopter find you? Where did they take you when you were rescued? Scenario text 2: How much money did you win? How did your dog choose the numbers? What are you going to do next? Back in the main sesion, T will comment on the ss stories and do some DEC.
