Main Aims

  • At the end of the lesson , students will have practiced reading for gist and details in the context of Masdar the city of the future

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to learn the related vocabulary and practice speaking about the future cities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Setting the lesson context and engaging the students

A board race activity, Students are going to write the features of the cities in 2050 on board one by one. Music is on, two groups, 3 minutes. (crazy and funny ideas are welcomed) The group with more accurate ideas will be the winner.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • Preparing students for the text and make it accessible / Activating the schemata

T distributes the hand-outs and Ss try to predict the content looking at the visuals on the book and the questions prepared by the teacher. The questions are as follows; Ss answer them in pairs. And Class feedback is given by T. 1- Where do you think the text is set? a) A city in Europe b) a city in United Arab Emirates c) a city in the United Sates 2- What do you think is the text going to be about? a) Solutions to traffic problem of a city b) new technological developments in a city c) The effects of high population on a city 3- What kind of text do you think is it? a)a blog post b) an essay c)a news article T asks some questions to the class orally about the pictures on the book to activate their background knowledge and engage them. 1- What problem do you see in the first photo? Does your city have this problem? If so, what are these problems exactly? 2- What is the vehicle in the second photo? How could it be a solution to the problem of traffic jam? 3- How is transport different in both pictures?

Pre-teaching Vocabulary (0-0 minutes) • Providing students with some blocking vocabulary

T tells that they are going to read a news article about Masdar city where the traffic congestion problem is going to be solved until 2030 by using new type of transportation. But before starting to read they need some words to learn to understand the text. While-Reading (15-20 minutes) • Providing students with gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss read the article and answer both the main ideas and detailed questions on the book individually and then share their answers in their groups. Feedback is given on the screen by the teacher.

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • Providing an opportunity to respond to the text and expanding on what they've learned by making inferences.

T tells that they are going to watch a video about the Masdar city project and they need to ask and answer the questions after watching the video. It is a mingle activity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llzq9YMsPP8 Discussion questions are as follows, 1- What are some possible benefits that the city offers to its residents? 2- Would you like to live in Masdar City ? Why or Why not? 3- Do you think this PRT System can be used in big cities of Turkey? T monitors the class and takes notes during the activity and makes error correction at the end of the activity on the board.
